The Level 3 qualification is aimed at those who are looking to build on their existing skills gained through an accounting and finance role, or for those who have successfully completed Level 2.

You must have knowledge and experience in double entry bookkeeping and working with accounting software.

What will I study?

The course comprises of FOUR units;

Upon completion of this unit you will:

  • Understand business types, structures and governance, and the legal framework in which they operate
  • Understand the impact of the external and internal environment on businesses, their performance and decisions
  • Understand how businesses and accountants comply with principles of professional ethics
  • Understand the impact of new technologies in accounting and the risks associated with data security
  • Communicate information to stakeholders

Upon completion of this unit you will:

  • Understand the accounting principles underlying final accounts preparation
  • Understand the principles of advanced double-entry bookkeeping
  • Implement procedures for the acquisition and disposal of non-current assets
  • Prepare and record depreciation calculations
  • Record period end adjustments
  • Produce and extend the trial balance
  • Produce financial statements for sole traders and partnerships
  • Interpret financial statements using profitability ratios
  • Prepare accounting records from incomplete information

Upon completion of this unit you will:

  • Understand the purpose and use of management accounting within organisations
  • Use techniques required for dealing with costs
  • Attribute costs according to organisational requirements
  • Investigate deviations from budgets
  • Use spreadsheet techniques to provide management accounting information
  • Use management accounting techniques to support short-term decision making
  • Understand principles of cash management

Upon completion of this unit you will:

  • Understand legislation requirements relating to VAT
  • Calculate VAT
  • Review and verify VAT returns
  • Understand principles of payroll
  • Report information within the organisation

AAT exam information

Students will be presented with a range of question types and formats in the assessment. These may include multiple-choice questions, numeric gap-fill questions, or question tools that replicate workplace activities such as drafting statements of financial position. In all assessments, some tasks will require written extended responses.

Each exam is computer-based with time restrictions. Exams can be taken at any time throughout the year.

Exams are available via assessment centre or remote invigilation. There is an additional charge of £37.00 per exam when sat remotely.

The minimum GLH for this qualification is estimated at 120 hours and the TQT is estimated at 240 hours. A learner needs to carry out independent learning, preparation, and activities relating to their qualification in addition to the GLH to meet the TQT of the CIPD Foundation Certificate.
